Hi, my name is Dru and I’ve been a Coach at Old Hickory Crossfit since 2017. I do what I love and helping others achieve their fitness goals is not only a job to me but a lifelong passion. Prior to OHC, I began my coaching journey as a personal trainer and teaching group classes at Centennial Sportsplex. Personally, I enjoy Crossfit because it pushes me beyond my comfort level. It teaches me discipline and patience to reach levels I did not know my body could reach. Even more, it is fun! I’ve developed great relationships with our athletes and being able to help them on their fitness journey is what drives me everyday. During my free time I love to spend time with my two kids…l taking walks, hiking, and exploring new things with them.

I was always the chubby kid growing up, so when I finally started enjoying fitness and running on a regular basis, my life was changed. Running got boring, and that is when I started Crossfit. Learning new skills and movements I didn’t even know existed, let alone could be done by everyday people like me is what I fell in love with. As I progressed in my own journey, I discovered that I had a passion for sharing those things with others, and that’s how I got involved in coaching! Coaching is one of the most rewarding experiences, which is why I am so happy to be at Old Hickory. The people and that passion from not only the members, but also the other coaches encourage me to pass on what I have learned and help everyone who walks through the doors be a little bit better each day.

I am a North Carolina native, and former collegiate athlete, and have lived in Nashville for over a decade. I am a Husband, Father, Marine, and CrossFit Coach. My interests include anything college athletics, anything fitness, and anything military/political/American history.  As a Marine for 20 years and counting, I believe there’s a reason the most elite military organizations in the world train in a way that's nearly identical to Crossfit's methods.  It is hands-down the most efficient, and effective way to maintain a level of fitness that can mean the difference in life and death, quite literally in some circumstances.  Its scalability and versatility allow absolutely any individual to reach that same level when their output is adequate. Put out.  I have been a member of OHC since 2019. I have since gotten my CF-L1 and Burgener Weightlifting L1 and hold a Master of Business Administration Degree.   “I found Crossfit in 2012 and loved it.  Strayed for a few years, and eventually got my wife addicted in 2019.  I don't plan ever looking back.  The first words out of our 6-year-old's mouth when she wakes up is, ‘Can we go to the gym?’ and I love that".

My Old Hickory CrossFit journey began like many members’ journey, in Misty and Shauna’sdriveway. I have been lucky to have had a front row seat to the birth and amazing growth of Old Hickory CrossFit, and it has had a profound effect on my life. As a former collegiate athlete, being active and competitive is in my blood. Our community at OHC has surrounded me with great people who have pushed me to be the best version of myself as an athlete. My current profession is as a high school math teacher and retired high school coach, so it was only natural for me to make the jump to becoming a Level 2 CrossFit Coach. I am one of those CrossFit athletes that love talking about CrossFit which may be annoying to my non-CrossFit friends. As an athlete, I love the diversity of our OHC community and the diversity of the workouts, every day is different. Each class I sign-up for is an adventure and thankfully, one I do not take alone! As a coach, I want class to be fun, safe, and push each athlete to improve. Fun from accomplishing the WOD and doing it with others. Safe for every athlete at every level and every age. And assisting and supporting all OHC athletes to reach their physical, mental, and emotional goal. This is only the beginning of my journey and I cannot wait to see what comes next.

I began my fitness journey in 2012 by taking boot camps at my local community center. Boot camps helped me lose close to 40 lbs but I needed to gain muscle. Starting Crossfit in 2013 was the best decision I ever made. My body quickly transformed, and I discovered strengths I never knew I had. I started teaching boot camps and fell in love with the ability to teach and help other people on their fitness journeys. Through group exercise instruction and personal training, I have worked with a variety of different clients and love seeing people achieve something they never thought possible. I apply positive coaching methods and believe through proper encouragement, athletes can achieve something they never thought possible, then take that confidence and mentality into their everyday lives. I am a huge nerd and love learning! You can find me reading a book every night. I love being a dog mom, pickleball, kayaking, Truly lemonades, dancing to “Pony,” and if you ask me what would be my perfect date, I’d say “April 25th, because it’s not too hot and not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.”

I have a long history of athletics and started CrossFit in 2017 when my College and Amateur Rodeo career were coming to an end. I started looking for something that was functional and I would not burn out doing and CrossFit was just that. It provided me the opportunity to do heavy lifting (which I love), learn movements I never thought I could do, push and challenge myself and be in a place to be pushed and challenged by the coaches and other athletes. Coaching has become something I am excited about every week and I look forward to helping our members grow in this sport as well as continuing my education so that I can be a better coach. When I’m not at Old Hickory Crossfit working out or coaching, I  am doing some kind of project ranging from fixing up a house to fixing up a truck with my weeny dog Karl. I am a US Army Veteran. While I was active duty I was a part of the 160th Aviation Special Operations Unit where I worked with some pretty badass helicopters, badass soldiers and proudly served my country. CrossFit has become a community that has not only helped me to become healthier but these people have become family and allowed me to make lifelong friends that have changed my life forever. I have had the opportunity to be a part of multiple CrossFit gyms across the country and although they were great, there is no place like Old Hickory CrossFit. From the moment you walk in, everyone wants to help you become a better you and be part of our family! I can’t wait for you to join us!

As a former collegiate swimmer, I was itching to find something that mimicked the same environment of hard work and camaraderie. I had heard about CrossFit but was intimidated by the looks of it. My friend kept talking about it and asking me to try it (we all have that one friend). I was intrigued because I had liked dryland training and weightlifting in college. Finally, one fateful day, I decided to give it a shot. I fell in LOVE with CrossFit, and I have not looked back since. CrossFit has given me so much - a great community of people, and it has put me in the best shape of my life. I didn’t think this was possible after college swimming. With a passion for sports and fitness, I grew up teaching swim lessons and coaching. When I find something I love, I like to share it with others, so it was only a matter of time before I wanted to coach CrossFit. I care about each and every person that walks through that door. I love helping athletes surpass their expectations of what they think they can accomplish. Technique, hard work, consistency, and a positive attitude are a recipe for success!I have been a member and a coach at other CrossFit gyms, and the Old Hickory CrossFit community is incomparable to anything I have experienced. It is a place everyone calls home and becomes a lifelong family. I have seen CrossFit transform people not only physically but mentally as well. They become fitter, stronger, and more confident in themselves. We get better by pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone, and having a support system to help us do that is essential for physical and mental growth. We would love to become a part of your life’s journey!

I made my home in Nashville after living in Iowa, China, Hong Kong, and Arizona.  During my travels I became a kickboxing instructor, learned Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and was a competitive bodybuilder.  I found CrossFit once I moved to Nashville in 2015 and received my CFL1 in July of 2021.   My husband, Robert, and I love being a part of the OHC community.  When not at the gym, we enjoy spending time with our dogs, playing Pokémon Go, and throwing themed costume parties.

My desire as a yoga facilitator is to deliver an accessible experience that empowers others to sink deeper into a pose and deeper into themselves. I hope to guide others into an experience that celebrates the body for all that it can do, while releasing the mind of uncertainty and self-doubt. My fitness journey stems from the desire to break generational habits so I can be the best version of myself for my children, and set an example for them to prioritize their mental and physical health. In addition to facilitating yoga, I own a therapeutic massage studio with my husband and am a public school teacher. My passions are my family, nature, literature, social equity and inclusion.
